Betsy McCall appeared in the mid-1950's.

She was manufactured by the American Character Company, who also made Tiny Tears and other famous dolls. Her hard plastic head has a beautiful bisque-like finish. Her hair was either a normal wig or a unique "rooted hair wig" with hair plugs inserted into a plastic skullcap. Betsy has jointed knees, and her middle fingers are molded together.

Betsy was her own thing: although the same height as other dolls in the 8-inch category, she had her own distinct look and shape. She was too slim to wear Ginny, Muffie, Pam, or Ginger's clothes, and yet she was not a grown-up or teenaged fashion doll like Sandra Sue or the new upstart Barbies.

She was marketed heavily in conjunction with McCall's magazines. Each month McCall's featured a page with a Betsy McCall story, with a paper doll and clothes to cut out, that related to the story.

Betsy has a VERY loyal following today, and she is PRICEY!
