If You're Serious About Small Vintage Dolls, This book is a Must-Have:
Ontario Plastics Paula Sue
The back marking (right) of an Ontario Plastics Paula Sue doll clearly says "Rochester, NY" although I have always been told that Ontario Plastics was from Ontario, Canada. (????)
Ontario Plastics was a Canadian company, linked by the Judds(Hard Plastic Dolls, by Pam & Polly Judd) with the Beehler Arts, Virga, and Fortune companies. However, Paula Sue is a much different doll.
She has toes, not molded-on T-strap shoes, like the vast majority of the Virga/Fortune dolls. Her face is entirely different, and she has a thick neck, and fingers that stick straight out rather than the uplifted forefinger-and-pinky of the Virga/Fortune dolls. She is the same size, however.
(Paula Sue's photo courtesy of Carol Stover) A comparison here of a Virga Lolly Pop (left) and Ontario Plastics Paula Sue (right) shows obvious differences in hands, neck, and face. In addition, Paula Sue has toes, but the Virga and Fortune dolls have (with just a few exceptions from the late 1950's) molded-on T-strap shoes. Paula Sue has a wide, square stance, more like Ginger, whereas the Fortune/Virga dolls stand with their feet close together.
